We love getting people together and getting them active, especially because of the health benefits it provides at any age. Even simple and low-impact forms of physical activity like walking or moving around throughout the day can improve your health, and the more you do them, the more improvement you’ll see. Plus, being active with friends provides social connectivity that can boost your mental health.
Community events like our fun Annual Walkathon are a great way to get moving with friends, while also empowering you to make a difference. Even if you’ve never done a charity walk before or you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help.
Here’s how you can have fun safely and support local causes by joining a walk:
Get Moving Early
Practice, practice, practice! If you aren’t used to taking longer walks, start by adding 5 – 15 minutes on your feet to your daily routine. Make sure to work up to longer walks progressively by adding a few more minutes each time you get up to move. If you live with joint pain or mobility issues, there’s nothing wrong with moving at your own pace or using a walking aid – when it comes to our community events, no one gets left behind. Look up more walking tips from fitness experts to make the most your active time.
Find a Friend
Partnering up is a fun way to stay motivated for walking and fundraising. If you’re not sure you can collect your own pledges, you can always find another walker and contribute to their campaign. If you know friends or peers participating, make plans to walk with them on the day of the event. Walking with friends or a group is a great way to spend quality time together, and using the “buddy system” can reduce risk of injuries, or falling.
Set Fundraising Goals for Yourself
When you take part in fundraising, you directly support organizations that serve your communities, and work with causes important to you. Decide how much you want to raise, and ask friends and family to contribute. For even better results, tell a personal story about why this cause matters to you. Small amounts add up and you’ll be reaching your goal in no time! Need ideas for where to start? At our Walkathon, walkers who raise $30 or more get a limited edition t-shirt and admission to our celebratory post-walk breakfast. If you can get 3 of your friends to pledge $10, you’ve made it! To stay motivated, raise your goal when you get close.
Plan What to Wear – Including Comfy Shoes
Get into the spirit by wearing something fun and on-theme for the event. (For instance, our 2023 Walkathon has a magical Halloween theme with a special prize for the best costume!) Express yourself with something festive that you might not normally have the chance to wear, but don’t sacrifice comfort – make sure you can still walk safely. Your outfit should allow for physical activity, including a pair of shoes you can walk around in. New shoes might give you blisters, so opt for something your feet are used to wearing.
Be a Good Neighbour and Enjoy Yourself!
The most important thing is to have fun! Enjoy the time spent walking with your friends, and remember there’s no need to rush through like it’s a race. Be mindful of others when walking in a public space or an indoor property, and avoid littering or other disruptions. Make sure to leave room for others to pass you if they wish. After the walk, congratulate yourself and enjoy your share of event goodies.
