6 Helpful Foot Care Tips for Older Adults

BY MICHELLE OLIVEIRA

As we age, taking care of our feet can become increasingly important for maintaining overall health and well-being. This part of self-care is often overlooked, but is essential for seniors as a means to prevent common issues that can affect mobility, independence, and quality of life.

Why is Foot Care So Important for Seniors?

Let’s discuss why foot care should not be neglected! Your feet are your foundation, enabling you to live an active and independent life. As we age, years of wear and tear can lead to foot problems such as arthritis, bunions, corns, calluses, and even more. These painful conditions can make everyday activities like walking unbearable. Older adults are also more susceptible to foot problems due to reduced circulation and thinning skin, which decreases the natural cushioning of the feet. Neglecting foot care may lead to serious complications such as infections, ulcers, and, in severe cases, amputation, especially for those with diabetes or vascular disease. Healthy feet allow for continued participation in activities you love, whether it’s going for a walk, gardening, or simply leaving your house to meet up with friends and family.

There’s no doubt that aging feet require extra care, so let’s dive into your new guide to foot wellness!

A Message to Those Living with or Caring for Older Adults:

If you are caring for someone with reduced eyesight, diabetes, mobility issues, dementia, or other chronic illnesses, they will need extra support and care to affectively maintain their foot health.

6 Tips for Healthy Feet

1. CHECK YOUR FEET DAILY

Regular foot inspections are crucial for seniors because they catch unusual changes or early signs of foot concerns before they worsen. Look out for calluses, cuts, ingrown toenails, bedsores, fungal infections or diabetes-related foot complications. Those with diabetes should be especially observant, as injuries can take longer to heal and are more likely to become infected due to damaged nerves that may diminish one’s ability to detect pain.

2. KEEP YOUR FEET CLEAN, DRY AND MOISTURIZED

Washing your feet before bed with warm water to eliminate germs and bacteria accumulated throughout the day. This step should be followed by drying your feet thoroughly to prevent fungal infections, as fungi thrive in moisture. Next, apply a moisturizing foot lotion to prevent painful cracks and keep skin supple, but avoid applying lotion between the toes to reduce the risk of fungal infection. Finish by putting on a clean pair of breathable cotton socks.

3. REGULARLY TRIM YOUR TOENAILS

Proper nail care is essential for older adults as long toenails can become painful and infere with stable walking due to swelling around the toes. If you’re going to trim your toenails at home, it’s recommended to cut them straight across and file the edges to avoid discomfort. If you prefer, to see a professional, you can sign up for foot care appointments at our Centre for treatment by a certified Chiropodist.

4. PERFORM DAILY FOOT EXERCISES

One in three adults 65 and older, and half of those aged 80 and older, fall at least once every year due to instability. Simple foot exercises like toe curls, ankle circles, calf raises, and daily walks can help build and maintain foot strength and flexibility, enhance blood circulation, and improve your balance so you can beat the odds!

5. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROPER FOOTWEAR

Wearing supportive footwear seems simple enough, yet approximately 72% of the population wear shoes that are either too big or too small for their feet. Seniors should avoid narrow, slippery, or ill-fitting shoes. Opt for shoes with velcro straps or elastic laces for better support. This is particularly important for those with circulation issues since good support promotes blow flow.

6. SCHEDULE REGULAR CHECK UPS WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR CHIROPADIST

Just like regular health check-ups, an annual foot inspection with a Chiropodist is very beneficial for catching early signs of foot issues and receiving expert advice and treatment. This step is essential for long-term foot health and overall well-being, so don’t skip it!

Your foundation for healthy aging starts with your feet! Many older adults understand the importance of staying active and taking care of their bodies, but their feet are often underappreciated. We encourage you to follow these 6 simple steps today before it’s too late.
